Now, say you do something like select all images, and assign a keyword "Foo" to them. IVMP does what I consider a "quick import", where it quickly adds it to the catalog and uses an existing thumbnail if present to show in the Thumbnail mode. The biggest problem I found with IVMP is when you are importing large numbers of images and adding meta data while they are importing. Safari is a great example: Great web broweser, but to get simple things like RSS built in, you have to upgrade to 10.4.x. Apple seems to upgrade their apps to only run with the latest version of their OS, so if OS 10.5 comes out, I don't expect the next iteration of iPhoto to run on anything less without some work. One thing I am worried about with iPhoto is that it might not work later when Apple releases new versions. Again, I run old hardware, and I wouldn't expect iPhoto to work flawlessly, but I'd expect an Apple product on Apple hardware would still run pretty fast, given the simple task it is performing. I was very excited about iPhoto when I first used it years ago, but over time it has gotten very, very slow on my hardware. It may take longer to catalog things, but its responsiveness in a machine that is three generations old is amazing.įinally, there is iPhoto.
On the other side of things, iView Media Pro (IVMP) is a very efficient program, once you understand how it does things (more on this below). The minimum requirements call for a 1 GHz G4 (last time I checked), and it needs it! My 733 MHz tower slugs away when cataloging large numbers of images. However, Portfolio is very processor intensive. Luckily Extensis released a patch from 8.1 to 8.1.1 and it's been a great product since. While I find Portfolio to be a very powerful product, the problems I had when upgraded from OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.x were very annoying. The two systems that I use the software on are very "old", one being a Pismo G3 at 400 MHz and the other a QuickSilver G4 at 733 MHz. I too have been trying out both iView Media Pro and Extensis Portfolio. I chose it over Portfolio, and am reasonably happy apart from the aforementioned glitches. Good software though, works brilliantly in lots of ways, but can bite. My problems all started after 'the great upgrade debacle of 06' which trashed all my catalogs and required me to start cataloging all over again. Lots of help there too from real-world users. Try the iView forum for an overview of whats going on. I am on a Mac G5 DP and OSX, and whilst I love what iView can do, I hate its problems, some of which are really frustrating, such as inability to batch add keywords without creating duplicates (iView techs cannot solve this one), inability to reliably write metadata to original files (again, they seem unable to rectify this), and the one I've wrestled with for 6 months now, every caption in the Title field being truncated to exactly 43 characters in jpegs.
